Shorewood Choirs - Who We Are
The Shorewood Choirs, under the direction of Jason Clark, represents the outstanding performing arts tradition in Shorewood. One of the finest choral programs in Wisconsin, the Shorewood Choirs have received numerous recognitions and honors. In October of 2012, the choirs made their Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra debut as part of the children’s choir in John Adams On The Transmigration of Souls, which received critical acclaim from Tom Strini, performing arts reviewer of the Third Coast Digest. In December of 2012, the Chamber Singers performed Gerald Finzi’s In Terra Pax with the Shorewood Chamber Orchestra and Grammy Award-winning baritone, Kurt Ollmann. In June of 2013, the choirs performed at Lincoln Center, in New York under the baton of Dr. Jerry Blackstone.. For the past eleven years, the choral program was identified by Choirs of America as one of the top choral programs in the nation.
Past honors have included being selected to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2001 and 2018 and sing the National Anthem at the Olympic Torch Ceremony in Milwaukee in 2002. In 2004, the choirs were chosen to perform with the Bel Canto Chorus of Milwaukee as part of their Young Choral Artists Festival. In 2008, they were featured artists on the Milwaukee Choristers 75th Anniversary Concert and also selected to participate in UWM’s inaugural honors choir. In the spring of 2009, the high school chamber singers were featured guests on the Knox College choir tour at St. Josephat’s Basilica. In March of 2010, the choirs participated in the Milwaukee Youth Music Celebration co-sponsored by the Milwaukee Children’s Choir and Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra.
The choral program in Shorewood comprises five choirs from Intermediate through High School age with a total enrollment that ranges from one hundred to more than one hundred and fifty singers.
The High School program includes a mixed voice Concert Choir and a treble-voice Chamber Choir. In the past twenty-three years, the Chamber Singers have received the highest possible ratings at each of the many competitions at the district and state level.
The High School Choirs have participated in performance tours across the United States and Europe including France, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. Most recently the choirs have performed in New York in 2001, 2013 and 2018, Paris and Normandy France in 2003, San Francisco in 2005, Hawaii in 2009 and at the Third Annual International Choral Festival in Rome, Italy where they performed at the Vatican, in June of 2011, and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York of 2013 and Southern France and Northern Spain in 2016.
